Governor Andrew Cuomo recently appointed UCP of NYC CEO, Edward R. Matthews to his 27 person Medicaid Redesign Team. This team of prominent healthcare leaders was assembled to provide the Governor with recommendations on how to reduce New York State’s Medicaid budget, which is currently 40% of the New York State $120 Billion budget. New York presently spends more than twice the national average on Medicaid services per capita. “We need to come together to find solutions to bring costs down without compromising care for New Yorkers and that is exactly what this team is going to do.” stated Governor Cuomo. The New York State Medicaid Redesign Team was modeled after Wisconsin discussions with their health care industry.
“Since Medicaid is a growing component of the NY State budget, I am pleased that Governor Cuomo has convened such distinguished men and women from all fields to begin to restructure this vital program,” said Edward R. Matthews. Since January, this team has met and recommended a plan to cut the Medicaid budget by $2.3 Billion dollars in the next year. The team will continue to make recommendations for redesigning Medicaid in future years, primarily in long term care.
