Wake Up Call

The issue of how self-advocates want to be related to in their daily interactions with staff is an ongoing process of education and exploring new ways to approach this topic. Wake Up Call was developed as a training film for staff working with people with disabilities, and addresses the way consumers want staff to speak, work, relate and interact with them. This video includes messages from UCP/NYC self-advocates, Commissioner Matthew Sapolin from the New York City Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, and comedian Geri Jewell.

Affirmations: Writing, Poetry, Paintings and Photography by People with Disabilities
|
Affirmations: Writing, Poetry, Paintings and Photography by People with Disabilities.
Affirmations, is a 68-page soft cover book of autobiographies, poems, black and white photography and full color paintings showcasing the talents and sensibilities of adult participants in UCP/NYC programs.
At UCP/NYC, participants in the adult day services and residential programs have long been encouraged to pursue their creative talents. Their perspectives—often viewed for the seat of a wheelchair or articulated through a speech device—are emotional, powerful and insightful. As Meredith Viera, Moderator and Co-Host of ABC’s The View, states in the Foreword, “Affirmations gives voice and perspective to the extraordinary insights of participants in UCP/NYC programs.” The book is beautifully designed and illustrated by volunteer Wilfredo Diaz.
