Transportation Access in NYC

Access-a-Ride

New York City Transit
Currently, there are 40 accessible subway stations in New York City. These stations either have a ramp or elevator to get from the street to the platform. All New York City Transit buses are equipped with a lift. New York City Transit offers a reduced fare for people with disabilities. Access-A-Ride
Access-A-Ride is a door-to-door paratransit service for people with disabilities provided by New York City Transit. This service is for people who are unable to use public buses or subways. The cost is $1.50 for a one-way fare. Please be prepared to pay the driver with exact cash or a token. Access-A-Ride operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Parking Permits for People with Disabilities
New York City issues two types of permits for citizens with disabilities -- a New York State permit and a New York City permit. Permits are issued by the Parking Permits for People with Disabilities (PPPD) unit for NY State permits for residents of the five boroughs of New York City.You are eligible to obtain a New York State permit from PPPD only if you are certified by your physician as having a disability which is permanent and which severely affects your ability to walk for long distances. (Diagnosing physicians or podiatrists must be NY State licensed.)

If you have a temporary disability, you may inquire about applying for a temporary permit by calling one of the New York State issuing offices, including Floral Park (516) 326-6300 or Bellerose (516) 354-1000 or Westchester County (914) 285-2957.

To obtain a New York City permit, you must live, work or attend school in New York City and must be certified eligible by a New York City Department of Health physician as having a disability which is permanent, severely affects your ability to walk, and requires the use of a private automobile for transportation. To apply, call the PPPD automated phone system at (718) 433-3100. Leave your name and address as instructed and an application will be mailed to you within two business days.
