Self-Advocacy at UCP/NYC
Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island have self-advocacy
groups based at UCP/NYC day programs. The groups
meet on a regular basis, addressing issues and
concerns that group members have identified.
The objectives of the self-advocacy group of
the Manhattan Day Habilitation Program are:
- to empower ourselves by learning to take
control of more choices that affect us
- to talk with others, both locally and far
away, to share and try to resolve issues
- to exercise political power
- to learn about the Americans with Disabilities
Act and how it can assist us
- to teach each other how to advocate for
ourselves and develop pride in ourselves
