Weekend Recreation (SPIRIT)

Program Description
UCP/NYC's SPIRIT Program (Special Programs Incorporating Recreational Instructional Therapy) is a Saturday recreation program full of adventure, challenge and fun. It offers the young person with physical challenges an opportunity to develop on many levels -- social, behavioral, emotional and physical. It also give families the respite time they look forward to and need.

Services
SPIRIT offers a wide range of interesting and creative activities that include:

  • swimming in an accessible pool
  • cooking
  • holiday and theme parties
  • movie and theater-going
  • visits to area museums, zoos and the aquarium
  • outings to New York City sites and attractions, such as South Street Seaport and Green Meadow Farm
  • dining out at local restaurants
  • visits to area parks
  • sports, including adapted hockey, basketball, baseball and bowling
  • crafts and creative projects

Hours of Operations
SPIRIT is open every Saturday of the year, except for major holidays. The program meets from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island.

Eligibility
SPIRIT is available to children, teens and young adults ages 10 to 21 who are physically challenged and live in either the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan or Staten Island.

Funding
SPIRIT is funded by the New York City Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Alcoholism Services and supplemented by private contributions to UCP/NYC. Transportation is available on a limited basis for some applicants.
