Preschool special education

Program Description
UCP/NYC's Preschool Special Education Services are a year-round, comprehensive education and therapeutic program serving children ages three to five who have physical and/or developmental disabilities. They are provided in settings where children with and without disabilities have opportunities to learn and grow together.

Services
Basic Preschool services include:

  • special education
  • speech, physical and occupational therapy
  • nursing, low vision and dental care
  • psychology
  • social work
  • adaptive equipment
  • seating and positioning
  • therapeutic swimming (Brooklyn and Staten Island only)
  • assistive technology

In addition, UCP/NYC offers several specialized classroom models geared to the unique needs of children with physical handicaps. These include:

  • augmentative communication
  • conductive education
  • computer-assisted instruction
  • special education itinerant services (SEIT)

Hours of Operation
Preschool Special Education is offered year-round except for some holidays and a three-week vacation in the summer. The program is open five-days-a-week between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Round-trip transportation between home and school is also provided as part of the service.

Eligibility
To be eligible for UCP/NYC's Preschool Special Education Services, a child must be diagnosed by an approved evaluator as having either a developmental disability or developmental delay, be between the ages of three and five, and live in either Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx or Staten Island. UCP/NYC's Preschool Special Education Services are suitable for the child with multiple physical and developmental disabilities, including challenging motor and health care needs.

Funding
UCP/NYC's Preschool Special Education Program is funded by the New York State Education Department and the New York City Board of Education. Services are provided at no cost to families.

Location and Travel Information
Preschool Education Services are offered in four New York City boroughs -- Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island. While transportation between home and school is provided for the children, families may contact the individual programs noted below for specific travel information.
