Program Description
UCP/NYC's Early Intervention Services are year-round
and designed to maximize the social, emotional,
physical and intellectual development of infants
and toddlers (ages birth to three) with special
needs. For each child, an Individualized Family
Service Plan is developed to focus on the child's
strengths and needs as well as the family's concerns.
Services
Services typically are provided at a UCP/NYC
center, but may also be offered in a child's
home. Services include:
- special education instruction
- speech, occupational and physical therapies
- augmentative communication
- adaptive seating and positioning
- adaptive equipment
- assistive technology, including adapted
toys
- health advocacy
Available services for families include:
- parent-child groups
- individual counseling
- monthly parent workshops
- referrals to community services
- assistance in transitioning to preschool
services
Hours of Operation
Services at UCP/NYC children's centers are provided
in half-day sessions either mornings or afternoons.
Children attend up to 5 days a week, depending
on need as identified in the child's "individualized
family service plan." Round-trip transportation
is also provided to families as part of the
service. In addition, extended day care and
private day care are available at UCP/NYC's
children's centers. Home-based services are
available between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and
6:00 p.m. and are scheduled at a time mutually
convenient for families and staff.
Eligibility
To be eligible for UCP/NYC's Early Intervention
Services, a child must be diagnosed by an approved
evaluator as having either a developmental disability
or developmental delay, be below the age of
three, and live in either Manhattan, Brooklyn,
the Bronx or Staten Island. UCP/NYC's Early
Intervention Services are suitable for the child
with multiple physical and developmental disabilities,
including challenging motor and health care
needs.
Funding
UCP/NYC's Early Intervention Program is funded
and regulated by the New York State Department
of Health and, in New York City, by the New
York City Early Intervention Services. Services
are provided at no cost to families.
Location and Travel Information
Early Intervention Services are offered in four
New York City boroughs -- Manhattan, Brooklyn,
the Bronx and Staten Island. While transportation
for children attending the centers is provided,
families may contact the individual programs
noted below for specific travel information.
