Assistive Technology Resources

Photo of a family

The Samuel Hausman Activities, Resource & Education Center (SHARE) is a unique resource for families with a child or young adult who has a developmental disability. Its goal is to educate and inform families so that they may empower their children to attain higher levels of independence and self-sufficiency through enhanced learning and play.

A team of specialists -- including a parent of a child with physical disabilities, a special education teacher with training in adaptive play, a computer technology specialist, an augmentative communication specialist, and a consumer information librarian -- is available upon request to assist parents/caregivers and their children.

Services
SHARE's strength lies in bringing together multiple specialized services in a single location. Some of the ways SHARE can help families include:

Print and Audiovisual Materials
Books, journals, magazines, pamphlets, audiotapes and videotapes are all available for loan. These materials provide information on a wide range of developmental disabilities topics.

Computer Technology
SHARE offers computer technology with adapted keyboards and peripherals, printers, and educational software for children. Families can explore available technology on-site by appointment, then take out special educational software for trial on loan.

Assistive Technology Resource Centers
SHARE is located at the same site of UCP/NYC's two Technology Resource Centers. Through AbleData and other sources and with the help of a technology specialist, families can obtain information on more than 17,000 specialized products that help individuals with disabilities become more independent.

Augmentative Communication
For individuals with speech impairments, SHARE offers an array of augmentative communication systems for demonstration purposes only. These range from simple non-electric aids to sophisticated computerized devices which produce voice output and written messages.

Adapted Toys
Since play is important for all children, UCP/NYC has made physical adaptations to a wide range of toys to accommodate children with special needs. These toys are available for loan at SHARE.

Eligibility
SHARE is a community service open to all.

Funding
There are no fees for utilizing SHARE's services. Funding is provided by both grants and private contributions to UCP/NYC.
