Technology Resource Centers

Assistive Technology is any item, piece of equipment, or product system which is used to increase, maintain or improve the functional capabilities of children and adults with disabilities. Since 1990, UCP/NYC has served as the New York City Regional TRAID Center (Technology Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities), a federally funded project administered by the New York State Office of Advocate for Persons with Disabilities.

Services
The services available at UCP/NYC's two Technology Resource Centers include the following:

Technology Information & Referral
UCP/NYC's' Technology Resource Specialists are available to answer your assistive technology questions. These include information on specific products and services, their costs, and how and where to obtain them. Important information about potential funding, eligibility criteria, and fair hearing procedures is also available.

Our easy-to-use library contains hundreds of product brochures, catalogs and videos. AbleData, a computerized listing of over 27,000 assistive technology products, is available for public use. You can stop by to use AbleData or request a search by phone, fax or e-mail. In addition, UCP/NYC can offer assistance in contacting local support groups, as well as regional and national associations.

Tech WorksTechWorks Demonstration Centers

The best way to learn about assistive technology products is to come in and try them out! You can "test drive" many products at UCP/NYC's two New York City-based TechWorks Centers — one at 120 East 23rd Street in Manhattan, and the other at 160 Lawrence Avenue in Brooklyn.

Both Centers also serve as the home base for SHARE, a unique resource for parents of children with disabilities. SHARE makes available a team of professionals to consult on services and technology needs for children.

TechWorks offers hands-on use of adapted toys and switches; adapted computers and peripherals; wheelchairs and inserts; augmentative communication systems; daily living devices; home and workplace modifications; environmental control units; adapted telephones; and more. To visit either Center, call in advance to set up an appointment for a time that's convenient for you. Tours for school groups, college classes, senior citizens, and others can be arranged by calling the Manhattan TechWorks Center at (212) 979-9700, ext. 709, TTY: (212) 253-2690 or the Brooklyn Techworks Center at (718) 436-7979 ext. 710, TTY: (718) 854-5656.

Lending Library
You can borrow, on a short-term basis, some of the adapted toys and switches, environmental control units and other equipment that UCP/NYC has available for loan. We also lend books, magazines, and audio and videotapes from our extensive library. The resources of the lending library are geared to children and adults of all ages, including youngsters birth to three who are eligible for Early Intervention services.

Equipment Exchange Program
UCP/NYC can assist you in accessing new and/or used assistive technology equipment made available through individual donations and listed on a statewide directory, TRAID-IN, administered by the New York State Office of Advcate for Persons with Disabilities. Call us to make use of this valuable resource.

Assistive Technology Training
UCP/NYC is highly committed to training consumers, professionals and family members on a variety of assistive technology topics. We offer informational materials, pamphlets, and videotapes at our Technology Resource Centers, in addition to conducting workshops, conferences and on-site presentations/demonstrations at locations throughout New York City.

Internet Services
Check out UCP/NYC's assistive technology information web page at http://www.ucpnyc.org/info/assist/what.cfm. In addition, stop by, fax, call, or e-mail us to request specific product searches via the Internet.

Eligibility
Information on assistive technology resources is available to anyone who requests it, including people with disabilities and their families, professionals in the field, and the general public.

Funding
UCP/NYC's TechWorks Centers are funded in part by a grant from the NYS Office of Advocate for Persons with Disabilities under PL105-394 by NIDRR, and the NYS Department of Health, Early Intervention Program, and supplemented by private contributions to UCP/NYC. There are no fees for using the Centers' services.
