Overnight Respite

Photo of a home

Program Description
UCP/NYC's Overnight Respite Program offers temporary overnight care for families who need a break from the continuous demands of caring for a family member who is physically as well as developmentally disabled. Located on the grounds of UCP/NYC's spacious 12-acre Bronx Campus in the Pelham Gardens neighborhood, families can be assured of a safe, comfortable, homelike and caring environment for their loved one. The residence is completely wheelchair accessible and is the only overnight respite program of its kind in New York City.

Services
Overnight Respite offers the following services:

  • all snacks and meals
  • regularly scheduled recreational activities
  • laundry services
  • bathing and personal care
  • routine administration of medications

Hours of Operation
The Overnight Respite Program is operational 24-hours a day, seven days a week. The program is open year-round, except for two weeks during the year when it is closed to provide vacation time for staff. Parents and guardians may stop by at any time to visit their family member who is a guest at the facility.

Find up-to-the-minute information about snow closings through the WCBS School Snow Closings system:  http://wcbs880.com/snow-closings/3073, where you can also sign up to receive email and/or text message alerts.

Eligibility
Any child or adult who is a New York City resident and is developmentally as well as physically disabled is eligible. Individuals with severe behavior problems cannot be accommodated. Guests may stay at the residence for up to seven days at a time and a maximum of 14 days per year. Two weeks notice is typically required for reservations. However, we recommend making reservations months in advance for holidays and the summer period when demand is greatest.

Funding
The Overnight Respite Program is funded by the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD) and is supplemented with private contributions. There are no costs or fees associated with using this program.

Location and Travel Information
Overnight Respite is located in a modern one-family home on the shaded grounds of UCP/NYC's Bronx Campus in the Pelham Gardens section of the Bronx. It is located several blocks off the Pelham Parkway West exit of the Hutchinson River Parkway. Families are responsible for providing their own transportation.
