Program Description
Supported Employment offers individuals with disabilities
who have demonstrated employable work skills the
opportunity to earn fair wages (at least minimum
wage) and to hold down a real job. Individual
skills are matched with employer needs to create
the most viable employment situation possible.
Services
For the individual placed in a supported employment
job, UCP/NYC maintains an ongoing presence in
the individual's life for as long as needed.
Specific services include:
- skills training & work-site adjustment
assessment
- job development
- job coaching
- adaptive technology
- ongoing counseling and support
Hours of Operation
Supported Employment counselors
are available Monday through Friday from 9:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Individual employees must
work whatever hours or schedule their jobs require.
Eligibility
Any adult (age 21 or older) with developmental
or physical disabilities who has the necessary
skills to succeed in a supported employment
work situation and has been referred for placement
through VESID.
Funding
Funding for administering the Supported Employment
program and providing placement specialists,
counselors and job coaches is provided by a
variety of sources, including: New York State
Vocational & Educational Services for Individuals
with Disabilities (VESID); New York City Department
of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Alcoholism
Services; New York State Office of Mental Retardation
& Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD); private
foundation support; and private contributions
to UCP/NYC.
