EXPLORE I Weekend Adult Recreation

Program Description
UCP/NYC offers two recreation programs for adults-EXPLORE I and EXPLORE II. EXPLORE I is a self-directed recreation program full of adventure and fun. Every week, group members take an excursion or trip in the metropolitan area to explore facets of what New York City and local communities have to offer.

Services
Group members plan the trips with the assistance of staff members, and are responsible for getting to our Manhattan Center located at 122 E. 23rd Street on their own. From there, agency vehicles transport the group to that week's adventure.

Past trips have included:

  • Chelsea Piers for bowling
  • The Boardwalk and Aquarium at Coney Island
  • The Bronx Museum of Art
  • The Newport Mall in New Jersey
  • Theater and movies
  • Local street fairs
  • Shopping and restaurants
  • Other outdoor activities

Hours of Operation
EXPLORE I meets every Saturday (except for major holidays) from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at 122 East 23rd Street, Manhattan.

Eligibility
EXPLORE I is available to adults age 18 years or older who are developmentally disabled and reside in Manhattan.

Funding
EXPLORE I is funded by the New York City Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation & Alcoholism.

EXPLORE II Monthly Party Night

Program Description
UCP/NYC's EXPLORE II program is a monthly party night at our Manhattan Center located at 122 East 23rd Street. This is a great way to meet new people and enjoy dancing the night away.

Services
EXPLORE II offers a unique opportunity for adults with disabilities to get together socially and enjoy good food and great music. Each party provides:

  • A light supper prior to dancing
  • Three hours of non-stop music provided by a DJ
  • Door prizes
  • Past themes included Back to the 50's, Dance Fever 70's and Spring Fling

Hours of Operation
EXPLORE II meets on the third Friday of each month (expect for major holidays) from 5:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Eligibility
EXPLORE II is open to adults 18 years or older who are developmentally disabled and live at home in Manhattan. Individuals are responsible for travel to and from the center.

Funding for EXPLORE II is provided by the New York City Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation & Alcoholism.
