What it is:  Hyperbaric
oxygenation therapy is defined as breathing 100%
oxygen while in an enclosed pressurized system.
Hyperbaric oxygenation therapy is medically accepted
for the use in a number of conditions, including
carbon monoxide poisoning, gangrene, skin ulcerations,
and in some cases to support the growth of skin
grafts used in the treatment of severe burns.
How it Works:  The
purpose of the therapy is to oxygenate the cells
of the body to promote healing of the damaged
tissues, to improve circulation and to decrease
swelling. Under the increased pressure, oxygen
is not only more available to the red blood cells
in the blood vessels of the lungs, but oxygen
is dissolved in the plasma of the blood. Therefore,
additional oxygen is available to the body's tissues
as the oxygen-rich blood circulates in the body.
Hyperbaric oxygen chambers can accommodate one
person or small groups. Sessions normally range
from 60 to 90 minutes, and occur five to six days
per week.
It is thought that in individuals with cerebral
palsy, some of the brain tissue around the damaged
area may be dormant and not dead. Therefore, when
stimulated by the therapy, the tissue may take
over some of the functions of the damaged areas.
