Charitable Remainder Trusts
Charitable Remainder Trusts provide friends
of United Cerebral Palsy of New York City with
the opportunity to make a substantial gift to
the organization in addition to fulfilling their
financial objectives.
Simply stated, Charitable Remainder Trusts require
the donor to irrevocably transfer money, property
or both to a trustee who invests and reinvests
the assets as a separate fund. The donor (and/or
another designated beneficiary) receives payments
for life or for a term of years. On the beneficiary's
death, the Trust's assets go to UCP/NYC.
Appreciated securities with low yield
dividends are an excellent way of funding these
gifts that usually provide greater income while
eliminating, or at least reducing, capital gains
tax.
Although different charitable trusts vary to
some degree, they all share the following characteristics:
- Provide you with the satisfaction of making
a significant gift to UCP/NYC during your lifetime.
- Offer payments for life to you and/or another
beneficiary you may designate.
- Provide an immediate federal and state income
tax deduction for a portion of the value of
the gift.
- Offer an opportunity to increase your income
from low-yield highly appreciated securities
or other property while reducing, and in some
cases, totally avoiding tax on the appreciation.
- Reduce your estate taxes.
We would be pleased to discuss charitable remainder
trust options with you and your financial advisors
to determine the one that will best meet your
financial goals.
