Bequests
By including United Cerebral Palsy of New York
City in your Will, you are leaving a legacy that
will enable children and adults with disabilities
to lead more productive and independent lives.
You may designate a bequest in your Will by preparing
a new Will or adding a codicil to your existing
one. We recommend that you consult with an attorney
to ensure that your wishes are carried out appropriately.
Types of Bequests
Bequests to United Cerebral Palsy of New York
City can take any of the following forms:
- A specific dollar amount.
- A residuary bequest in which UCP/NYC
receives all or a percentage of the remainder
of your estate after all obligations are met.
- A contingent bequest in which UCP/NYC
becomes the beneficiary only if the named beneficiary
is unable to accept the bequest.
- A specific dollar amount or a percentage
of the adjusted gross estate as determined
for federal tax purposes, whichever is the lesser.
A number of our friends provide life income in
their Wills for survivors, with the principal
eventually going to UCP/NYC. We would like to
share with you and your advisors the tax and financial
benefits of those gifts.
Specimen Bequest Clauses
The following specimen clauses are useful in
making a bequest:
Unrestricted Specific Dollar Bequest
"I give the sum of $______ to United
Cerebral Palsy of New York City, Inc. located
at 80 Maiden Lane, New York, New York 10038 for
its general purposes."
An unrestricted bequest is most useful to UCP/NYC
because it allows the organization to use your
gift wherever it is most needed.
A Specific Legacy
"I give [the sum of $_______] [or all
or _______% of the residuary of my estate] to
United Cerebral Palsy of New York City, Inc. located
at 80 Maiden Lane, New York, New York 10038, for
the following purpose: ______________________."
(state purpose)
Important: If you do specify a use for
your bequest, the following language will
assure that your gift always remains productive:
"If, in the opinion of the Board of Directors
of the United Cerebral Palsy of New York City,
Inc., the designated use of the bequest is no
longer practical, or appropriate, and in their
judgment the organization is better served by
using the income for the Organization's general
purposes, the income may so be used, giving consideration,
where possible, to my special interest."
Gift of Residuary Estate
"I give all (or ______% of the residuary)
of my estate to United Cerebral Palsy of New York
City, Inc. located at 80 Maiden Lane, New York,
New York 10038."
Tax Benefits
An outright bequest is fully deductible for estate
tax purposes.
