| Doorways to Independence |
01/23/2008
Is your child getting too big to be carried up and down the front steps? Have you started using a wheelchair to get around and now you can’t get into the bathroom on your own? Does your dad’s arthritis make it difficult –and painful – for him to get upstairs at the end of the day? Whether you live with your family or on your own, your home is important to you. You want to be able to live comfortably in it as long as possible. Or, you want to be able to keep your loved one with you as long as possible.
Most apartments and houses in New York City are not built to be accessible, but Doorways to Independence can help change that.
An initiative of United Cerebral Palsy of New York City (UCP/NYC), Doorways to Independence helps individuals with disabilities live in accessible housing, both through home modifications and housing case management. By widening doorways and installing special switches, handrails and grab bars, individuals with limited mobility can move about more freely, access every room, and operate lights and equipment with greater ease. Installation of ramps and lifts can provide increased access to the world outside their home.
In addition, our housing case management services can help families navigate the complex housing systems in New York City.
UCP/NYC can relieve some of the challenges of life with a disability with the resources available through our Doorways to Independence programs, which include Access to Home and Housing Assistance Services. From home modifications to resolving a housing issue, we can help.
