UCP to Honor Joseph Abboud
(New York, NY) -On Monday, November 18, 2002,
at 6:00 pm, United Cerebral Palsy of New York
City (UCP/NYC) will honor internationally renowned
menswear designer Joseph Abboud at the agency's
12th Annual Sports and Entertainment Fantasy
Auction at Mickey Mantle's, located at 42
Central Park South in Manhattan. Celebrities,
sports legends and media personalities will all
be attending this fun and exciting evening!
Joseph Abboud began his career in Boston, MA
at a prestigious retail store, Louis of Boston.
Over the course of 12 years, he served as Buyer,
Merchandiser, and Coordinator of Promotion and
Advertising. Following that, he spent three years
as Director of Menswear Design for Polo/Ralph
Lauren. It was there that he refined his own vision
of men's wear and then went out on his own-with
much success.
Abboud's collection includes men's belts, fragrances
for men, men's sleepwear, robes and loungewear,
men's rainwear, and men's scarves in addition
to his tailored clothing and sportswear. In 2000,
Abboud entered into the world of Home Fashions
with the "Environment" collection that
includes bed and bath items, decorative fabrics,
kitchen textiles, hand-made patchwork quilts and
accessories, down comforters and pillows, china,
flatware, woven and printed area rugs, and mattresses.
Since the debut of his collection, Abboud has
received numerous honors including the distinction
of being the only designer to have received the
coveted Menswear Designer of the Year two
years in a row (1989 & 1990) from the Council
of Fashion Designers of America. In May 1994,
Abboud received the Special Achievement Award
from The Neckwear Association of America.
Presented solely when the association feels an
individual's work has changed the face of the
industry, only two other designers have been honored
in the association's 18-year history.
Abboud is the Official Designer for the
NBC Olympics, CBS's March Madness,
and the NFL Today. He provides wardrobes
for Tom Brokaw, Bob Costas, Pat
O'Brien, Bryant Gumbel, Jack Ford
and Don Imus. Additionally, he has recently
accepted a position with the University of Massachusetts,
Boston as a "Distinguished Visiting Professor
of Marketing." Abboud also designed the "2003
Buick Regal Joseph Abboud Limited Edition"
car, and is also working with PBS on a new series
called Men in the Middle.
UCP/NYC would like to express its appreciation
to the sponsors for the evening: Continental Airlines,

& Bruckman, LLP, Vincent Farrell, Jr., Media
